* Long Day
New goal: I think I am going to make it a point to blog more often even when things start to get really crazy. Like today.
Pro-Comp tutorial ~ Ethics
I am not sure what to say about this group tutorial other than the fact that it could be good and bad at the same time. We've established the fact that many people, especially first year med students, do not have a general framework to approach ethical situations. Some students in our group have (never) heard the four general principles of ethics(autonomy, beneficience, nonmaleficence, justice). Others with their nursing backgrounds may also have a lot of clinical experiences. Obviously, our facilitators (let alone our future patients!) had big problems with this and one lady made this evident in her feedback to the pro-comp group. It just seems to me that those without medical or prior experience in relation to ethics would lack the framework necessary to make ethical decisions. For me I think that people wouldn't know enough about the topic to have hard core evidence to justify or defend rationally what they would have to say, so how could she be so hard on us? This irked me quite a bit.
MF1 tutorial ~ Resp. - Obstructive and Restrictive (non-obstructive) Diseases
I love my group and tutor!!! Honestly, the PBL format has been one of the hardest things, for me at least, to adjust to after coming to MAC. I can really see the change in myself because I am starting to really believe in their philosophy of learning. It is such a supportive and comfortable environment that I actually improved my participation and initiation of certain objectives and topics in the group tutorial. Can't complain right now and can't be more happy at the present moment!
Sexual Health Lecture ~ Medical Abortion Procedures
This was quite a different view from what was and has always been driven into me. From pro-life presentations to speakers, I was always taught that abortion was a traumatizing experience with not only increased health complications but long term emotional problems. It's murder...or is it? Very interesting to hear what the other side had to present:

* Complications women face after an abortion: less than 1%
~ Rare to experience fertility problems
* In Canada, one cannot have an abortion after 22 weeks vs. US, full term abortions
* Most women do not experience emotional problems at all. Rather, they feel that "...they got their body back. They were in control...It was the best decision of their life."
* Youngest age a woman had an abortion: 12 yrs

When critically evaluating this lecture piece, it just felt that things didn't sit right with me. Where is the hard evidence? Compared to what I've been exposed to, it just seemed a little watered down, especially the procedures. What I also didn't like was her allusions to the idea that Pro-Life = religions groups. Honestly lady, please make sound arguments independent of religion instead of making false accusations or making them look bad. Isn't this some ad hominen fallacy or something?
Other than that, Bean Bar Dessert with the girlz: Good times ladies, good times.
